It gives us great pleasure to share our much-anticipated 2014 Safari Guide of the Year video with you, as promised in our previous post about this phenomenal initiative. Credit and gratitude goes to Africa Direct Tour and Travel Operators and The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa for bringing the competition into being, for the benefit of everyone involved, the guiding industry as a whole and the broader tourism industry in South Africa. Above is a photo of Dave, capturing the high-octane action at the shooting range. No prizes for guessing how cold it was, taking place from 21 – 26 June.
Mike Karantonis from Africa Direct, who initiated this competition, mentions that few people realise quite how big the tourism industry is in this country, reaffirming how essential it is that the people leading it are of a high calibre. Key sponsor Rebecca Green adds that it’s important to see the safari guides getting the recognition they deserve. We couldn’t agree more, as we’re sure you’ll also acknowledge after watching this video. It’s packed with insight, action and African bush magic, hosted at Nkambeni Safari Camp in the Kruger National Park. If you love nature and wildlife, then this is for you. Enjoy!
Heartfelt congrats again to winner Nick du Plessis of Singita, runner-up Brett Horley of Brett Horley Safaris, as well as the other five finalists: Jabulani Silinda and Rudi van Niekerk from Kariega Private Game Reserve, Juan Heydenrych from Pilanesberg Game Reserve, Raymond Khosa from SANParks and lovely lady contestant Laetitia Cronje from Campfire Academy. Here they all are at the final awards ceremony:
Wrapping with a comment from Brett Horley, he says that the Safari Guide of the Year competition is ‘inspiration for all the guides out there,’ which is so true. It’s also wonderful that the 2015 event will be the fifth in a row. Please help us to spread this message by sharing our video, so that together we can support this special initiative in growing from strength to strength. Thank you!
