Shooting Maria Sharapova’s Shoe

What great tennis we’ve been watching . . . congrats to the Australian Open finalists, and especially the winners, Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka.

It was wonderful to read on the SuperSport site how the Belarus President honoured Victoria with the Order of the Motherland, recognising her achievement as the first Belarusian to win a grand slam singles title and to top the world tennis rankings.

Still, we have a soft spot for Rafael Nadal and also Maria Sharapova, particularly since we’ve had the pleasure of photographing her autographed tennis shoe (featured above), which was donated to raise funds for the Faces of Hope Foundation here in South Africa.

We achieved this in studio with the help of our light table, using two soft boxes to light the shoe from above and to each side, as well as a third light source shooting upwards from below the table. This light was covered with a pink gel sheet to create the beautiful back glow, without affecting the shoe.

Here it is again, after being expertly framed, along with some other memorabilia, and etched out of the white background we used to shoot it:
