Congrats to the team at Nomadik Tents on the record number of stretch tents that they set up for the recent Discovery 702 Walk The Talk event, held at Marks Park Sports Club in Johannesburg, A world first, these tents spanned 13,000+ sq m and took two-and-a-half days to erect on behalf of HSP (Harford Sports Promotions), who did an outstanding job of managing the event. It gives us great pleasure to share our much-anticipated 2014 Safari Guide of the Year video with you, as promised in our previous post about this phenomenal initiative. Credit and gratitude goes to Africa Direct Tour and Travel Operators and The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa for bringing the competition into being, for the benefit of everyone involved, the guiding industry as a whole and the broader tourism industry in South Africa. Undoubtedly among the hottest boys’ toys with benefits to hit the market lately, unmanned aerial drones are causing a great deal of contention. At a loss about how to deal with their runaway popularity, authorities’ responses include threatening to outlaw all use of them. Of course, military spec drones could pose a serious threat that has to be contained – still taking into account their powerful potential to effectively combat poaching, for example – but we’re talking about the smaller drones that fly way below aircraft level, over shorter distances with more limited battery life.
